Established in 1996, this award recognizes the significant contribution of Dr. Walter P. de Groot in advancing the specialty of venous and lymphatic disease by providing access for physicians seeking to advance their training in venous and lymphatic disease.
Known for his ability to accommodate opposing viewpoints with tact and simplicity, Dr. Walter de Groot endeared himself to colleagues both nationally and internationally. The award will enable medical Residents and Fellows access to the educational benefits of the American Vein & Lymphatic Society (AVLS).
U.S. Medical Students, Residents and Fellows that are considering a practice in venous and lymphatic medicine are eligible for the de Groot Scholarship.
The purpose of this award is to continue Dr. DeGroot’s mission of promoting the sharing and exchange of venous and lymphological knowledge. The award provides an educational grant to attend the American Vein & Lymphatic Society Annual Congress, which includes complimentary conference registration and $1,500 towards travel expenses. Additionally, the recipient will receive a one-year membership in the AVLS. Successful applicants will also be honored at the meeting with their name and training institution recognized during the meeting. They will also be invited to the Presidential Reception and New Members Reception.
Applicants are required to submit a detailed outline of her/his rationale for attending the AVLS Congress and what they hope to learn. The applicant must also provide a letter of recommendation from their current Program Director acknowledging that the applicant has a keen interest in venous and lymphatic disease and will represent the standards set forth by the AVLS in the treatment of venous and lymphatic disease. Applicants that are able to submit a research abstract to the annual congress will be awarded special consideration. Additionally, the de Groot applicant should not have received a prior AVLS training scholarship and should not already be funded by other grants to attend the meeting. Successful applicants will be invited to be an active and contributing member of the Resident and Fellow’s Section of the AVLS for a two-year term and will be expected to participate in the bi-monthly conference calls and a face-to-face meeting at the Congress.
Applications will be reviewed by the AVLS Education Standing Committee. The selection process will be based on prior and proposed interest in venous and lymphatic disease, course of study and past, present and future contributions to phlebology. Up to three (3) awards will be available each year. Application deadline each year is June 30th. If the selected scholarship recipient has already registered for Annual Congress, his or her registration will be refunded.
