GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed. Under general supervision of the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) site Medical Directors (henceforth Medical Directors), the Sclerotherapy Registered Nurse will consult with patients regarding an appropriate course of treatment for varicose veins and/or venous insufficiency. After approval by the Medical Director, the Sclerotherapy Nurse would be responsible for performing visual, vein light and/or ultrasound guided sclerotherapy injections to treat surface veins. Perform other appropriate procedures independently and under the Medical Directors supervision. Worksite could be one of four locations; Stoneham, Danvers, Boston, Waltham. Evaluate and assist with post-operative patients during follow up appointments including, dressing changes, review of post-op instructions and care, and confirm appropriate follow up. Assess patient’s treatment results and assign to further plan. This position will require a significant level of independence and autonomy. Conform to IAC (venous accreditation organization) standards, recordkeeping, and reporting; ensuring medical record standards are followed. If qualified, assist with screening, ordering of aesthetic products properly maintaining storage, and administering injectables according to protocol and Medical Directors general supervision.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation. Consult with patients, perform evaluation of patient history and examination including vital signs, weight, and necessary intake information, discuss further plan regarding an appropriate course of treatment for varicose veins and/or venous insufficiency. Measure patients for compression stockings, provide prescription signed by surgeon and assist patients in obtaining stockings. Photograph venous patients (pre and post-treatment) download, and file photos in patients’ chart or electronic record. Track and document the effectiveness of treatment through photos and notes. Explain in full the risks and benefits of sclerotherapy and other procedures performed regarding; how many treatments will be necessary to obtain optimal results, pricing, aftercare, and the importance of compression stockings. Ensure patients complete consent for procedure or treatment. Follow Universal Protocol process and routine sterile technique, assess different size vessels to be treated and treat with appropriate sclerotherapy solution. Provide appropriate care during the patient’s treatment period and follow up appointments. Enter patient-related documentation into electronic medical record (EPIC) to include office/procedure/treatment/surgical notes, discharge summaries, pathology reports, etc. in an accurate and timely manner. Evaluate the patients’ treatment plan on an ongoing basis and refer to physicians if change or progression in venous disease or other co-morbidities occur. Educate patients about preventive care, medical issues and the use of prescribed medical treatments. Ensure that patient’s records are accurate and complete including notes to appropriately document patient's treatment and activity. Prepare and submit charges to the Professional Billing Office. Assist in evaluating the quality and care of equipment, instruments and supplies. Actively participates in the Universal Protocol process. Triage and document clinical phone calls; send to physician as needed. Provide assistance to physicians in venous procedures when needed. Maintain Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) practice standards, patient recordkeeping, procedure and complication log and quality measures in conjunction with venous Medical Director and Practice Manager. Facilitate evaluation of records by physicians, peers and Quality standards according to established protocols, monitor and enforce all OSHA policies and guidelines as directed, ensure compliance with policies and procedures required for Quality Assurance, act in compliance with HIPAA and legal rules and regulations that apply to this position. Must maintain a professional appearance, provide excellent customer service and promote the highest level of patient satisfaction.

QUALIFICATIONS: MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.

  • Current licensure as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Bachelor of Science preferred but not required.
  • 2-4 years’ experience as a sclerotherapy nurse and cosmetic nurse is preferred but not required.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: MUST be realistic, measurable, objective, and related to the essential functions of the job.

  • Maintain competent level of clinical knowledge through ongoing education at approved CME classes.
  • Sclerotherapy, (preferably including visual, vein light and ultrasound guidance) procedure experience in an outpatient setting.
  • Must maintain all required licensure & certifications; must meet annual CEU requirements.
  • Mastery of basic clinical writing skills.
  • Strong clinical assessment and decision making skills. Must be able to solve "real time" problems exhibiting sound judgment and confidence. Must adhere to standards of nursing clinical practice.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills. Must be able to work collaboratively with both licensed (professional) and non-licensed staff exhibiting professionalism, support of attending surgeon’s viewpoint, and cohesive team spirit.
  • Maintenance of level of knowledge that meets MGH standards and closely represents that of peers in the Dept. of Nursing / Patient Care Services.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and promote compliance with all hospital policies and state and federal statutory requirements as they relate to the delivery of care, medical records documentation and patient privacy.
  • If laser treatments or aesthetic injectable procedures are performed must maintain appropriate training and credentials.
  • Is knowledgeable and compliant in all hospital, State and Federal regulatory requirements, including hospital policy and procedures (where applicable to the performance of the job), Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
  • Period of supervision and instruction required. Signoff before treating patients independently at the discretion of the site Medical Director.
